On my killer off-road mountain biking adventure this weekend, I was reminded of how important it is to keep my eyes and mind where they need to be. Although I don’t profess to be Lance Armstrong, riding up and down gravel- and rock-covered mountains remind me of a roller coaster ride, only there’s no seat-belt, so I need to steer accurately and watch where my tires go.
Gravel is fine, and bigger, smoother rocks are okay too, but those small rocks that are about the size of a golf ball can be a real bitch (pardon my language, but no other words seems quite as suitable). You’ve got to avoid those rocks because they’re just big enough to throw your tire off, causing you to wipe out. This is not so bad going up hill, but trust me, when you’re sailing down hill at a pretty good clip, and the hill has got lots of rocks, you’ve got to make sure that you navigate your tires around or between them or else you’re sure to end up sideways.
I noticed that instead of looking at ways between or around the “bad” rocks, I was staring right at them, increasing the risk of wiping out and ruining my ride. Then it struck me how similar this is with the Law of Attraction and life in general. The truth is that whatever we focus on expands. Because I was thinking about those rocks and how I wanted to avoid them, I was aiming my darn tire right at them! It’s kind of like when we sit and worry about something over and over again–until it’s embedded in our mind like a bad youtube video–then it comes to fruition, and what do we say? “I just KNEW” that was going to happen!” Well, duh, we MADE it happen. What we focus on expands.
While I’m not sure how or why it works, and trust me, I have invested hours I won’t admit to studying up on it, I do know one thing for sure: where attention goes, energy flows. Wherever we choose to put our thoughts, our efforts and attention, something is bound to happen. The key is WHAT you focus on. Are you focusing on paying your bills off, or the FEAR that you won’t be able to? Are you focusing on attracting new clients, or on what will happen if you DON’T get any? You see, the topic is the same (bills, new clients) but the focus is different.
All I know for sure is that whatever we put our attention on–for good or bad–somehow always comes true. Focusing on the space between and around the rocks kept me safe, but when I was giving the rocks I wanted to avoid my attention, I almost lost it. Our outlook indicates our outcome, and this applies to anything.
For example, I tell my clients, especially those who tend to worry a lot, “focus on the house selling (or finding the perfect home) and that’s what will happen.” And when they do, it does! It works just the same on anything.
So, remember this week that what you focus on expands. Put your attention only on what you want to create, and don’t give any energy to anything you want to avoid.
Happy Monday!
